AHEAD of launching the party’s poll campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, the top Congress leadership on Tuesday paid their respects to Mahatma Gandhi at the Sabarmati Ashram here.  The party leaders led by their chief Rahul Gandhi, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sought to give a symbolic message to the people of the country by remembering Mahatma and his ideals of non-violence and tolerance.

Other party leaders like A K Antony, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ahmed Patel, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, former chief ministers Siddaramaiah, Tarun Gogoi, Harish Rawat and Oommen Chandy attended a prayer meeting at the Sabarmati Ashram.  The party started the day by paying rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at the Sabarmati Ashram here. The day also marks the anniversary of the historic Dandi March, started by Mahatma Gandhi from Sabarmati Ashram on March 12, 1930.

This was the first official meeting of Priyanka Gandhi after assuming an active political role in the Congress party. The day-long meeting of the Congress Working Committee assumes significance as it comes barely two days after the declaration of the poll schedule.

Briefing reporters after the CWC meeting, party’s senior spokesperson Anand Sharma said the Congress is committed to restoring the health of the Indian economy which has been collapsing due to the “monumental mismanagement” under the Modi Government.By launching its poll campaign from Gujarat, the Congress has sought to send a strong message to the BJP and the Government that it will fight back strongly and not allow the narrative to be taken away from real issues confronting the people, instead of rhetoric that the BJP wants to focus on.

In her speech, Sonia Gandhi accused Modi of playing the “victim card” saying the people of the country were the victims of his “wrong policies” instead. She said Modi was undermining national security and lashed out at the government for ‘politicising’ issues related to national interest for political gains. Sonia wanted Congress to come out with a vision for the country going forward as also highlight the achievements of the UPA Government. The meeting started with a two-minute silence in memory of the victims of the Pulwama terror attack. The CWC meeting was held in Gujarat after a gap of 58 years. It was last held in the State at Bhavnagar in 1961.

‘YOUR VOTE IS WEAPON’: In her first political rally, the newly appointed Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday told electorates that their votes are a “weapon” which should be used wisely, disregarding useless issues and tall claims made by others.

“Your awareness is a weapon, your vote is a weapon. It is a weapon where no one will get hurt or sad, it is that weapon which will make you strong,” said Priyanka amid loud cheers from the crowd at the rally in Gandhinagar. Targeting PM Modi, Priyanka said that those who do “badi badi baatein (tall claims),” the people should ask where is two crore jobs and the Rs 15 lakh to every account as promised during the last Lok Sabha poll campaigning.

Hardik joins Cong: PATIDAR quota agitation leader Hardik Patel joined the Congress in the presence of party President Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Justifying his decision to enter active politics ahead of Lok Sabha polls, Patel said he could now work for the six crore people of Gujarat in a better way.
